These are specialist custom devices that you insert into your current footwear (in most cases) which control or alter the way your foot and lower limb works / functions. They can be used to eliminate or reduce pain and enhance motion. They are not arch supports. They are very powerful appliances which are designed to enhance motion. Please do not confuse Custom Foot Orthoses with off-the shelf orthoses.
They can be used to :
- Reduce the overuse of muscles.
- Control foot, ankle, knee and hip motion.
- Alleviate painful flat foot deformity
- Stop / help with ankle sprains / strains.
- Remove pressure from painful feet or diabetic ulcerations.
- Treat arthritis
- Treat Achilles Tendon problems.
- Treatment of knee problems.
- Alter posture.
- Alleviate pain that has biomechanical, neurological (nerves) or circulatory (blood) causes.
There are three main types of Foot Orthoses:
1. Custom Bespoke Foot orthoses - These are made from plaster of paris casts of your feet and contain a presciption which is specific to the individual patient.
2. Custom Modular Foot orthoses - These are made with a presciption which is specific to the individual patient where casting is not necessary. These account for 80% of foot orthoses issued to patients at this clinic.
3. Non-custom foot orthoses - These can be purchased from retail outlets which contain a minimum amount of prescription.
All Foot Orthoses / Insoles prescribed by myself are: Comfortable to wear, made to fit your current footwear (99% of the time) , issued within 1-2 weeks and are CE marked materials.
