Plantar Fasciitis or Plantar Fasiopathy is painful disabling foot condition which is one of my main specialist areas of practice. Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis at this clinic is based on recent research presented at the Fascia Research Congress and using techniques taught to me directly by Dr Robert Schleip, one of the worlds leading experts on fascia research.
Dr Robert Schleip, Fascia Research Project, Applied Physiology, University of Ulm, Germany
There are generally two main types of plantar fasciitis:
1. Where there is an active inflammation of the fascia. This
is likely to be either early on in the disease or possibly later on in
certain cases. Some forms of arthritis or systemic problems may cause
this also.
2. Where there is likely to be no active inflammation. This
is likely in most cases presenting to clinic. Current research suggests
the fascia becomes thickened, dehydrated and less elastic.
The
treatments provided at this clinic aim at making the plantar fascia more
elastic and stretch better and also to re-hydrate the fascia in a
painless way. This generally involves specific non-painful manual
treatments to the fascia which are based on research at Ulm University. I
also utilise more traditional approaches such as foot orthotics /
insoles, but these are not always necessary.
Fascia is a beautiful structure present throughout the body. Once thought to be a simple binding tissue it has recently been shown to include cells which are important for brain body feedback, has the ability to contract like muscle, is essential for smooth movement of the body and is a water based communication system.
